music project | TRAVELLER.

friends, what a whirlwind these past 8 months have been.  

exciting news:  towards the end of the summer, I will be releasing my first EP under the artist name TRAVELLER.

the nitty gritty:  

the name TRAVELLER stems from a group of nomadic irish folk musicians that called themselves the Old Irish Travellers, or as translated in Irish Cant, "the walking people".  I randomly found this group on google (thank-you, social media) & thought the name TRAVELLER encompassed who I am in this stage of life.  I wanted to keep music & photography separated & let's face it, my full name, Mikaela Steinwedell, is near impossible to spell or pronounce (thanks, mom & dad). 

thus was the birth of TRAVELLER.  the songs on this EP reflect not only a travelling of my physical body, but also of my heart & mind.  we are all travellers of some sort as we weave through life, & my hope is that these songs will relate to whatever path of life you are walking on.

last week commenced the first round of recording, which will be finished at the beginning of May.  I cannot express how grateful I am to the number of friends & family who have supported me & helped to make this album infinitely more than I could have imagined.

a couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of collaborating with my super talented friend, Moriah.  she is a hauntingly beautiful writer, and she came to me wanting to write a poem about how she views herself based off of a picture I took of her.  

below is the end result, the words written by Moriah & the photo that inspired them at the bottom:

a photograph: double-exposed.

One day my shoulders

will shrug with old age,

and my spine will bend gently

like it’s reaching for the ground.

My hair will turn grey

or fall out in weird places,

and the skin on my arms will

stretch away from my bones.

But for now, here I am:

average height, slender frame;

A few scars in weird places

a few crooked, stained teeth.

Full cheeks that push my

eyes shut when I smile;

Green eyes that turn grey

like clouds holding rain.

//

I don’t look in mirrors much

because I never know what I’ll see.

Some days my cheeks look empty

and my grey eyes not green;

or my thin arms look thinner

than they did yesterday

and it looks like my hip bones

might rip through my jeans.

And if I can see past the acne

I should have grown out of by now,

I see only scars over freckles

on a shapeless bone frame.

So I cover my face with my hands,

hiding my body in my arms,

and let my bony shoulders shrug

like they’re trying to fold up

like a piece of used paper

or an old cardboard box.

But most days I see both-

like a photograph, double-exposed.

I edited some things I've shot recently, & I'm loving the variety & coloring of the filters.  I'm excited to keep working with these!

meet my name-twin & soul-sister Macayla.  she, too, hails from the great land of Texas, & she has quickly become one of my dearest friends in Nashville.   

sadly, she's saying adios to america for the next 6 months to go farm & adventure in New Zealand (whatever, I'm not jealous), so I was determined to get some pictures of her before she left.  I used mostly film, which got partially damaged while it was being processed, but I actually think the damage made the pictures really vintage-y & beautiful, and I'm super pleased with how they came out.  that's part of the risk of working with film, but also part of the beauty.
